Waste and Recycling code

The Pitkin County Waste and Recycling code took effect in January 2019. The goal of the code is to offer subscribers of trash service options for the size of the trash can they need and to include recycling as part of curbside collection. Trash haulers are now required to provide curbside single-stream recycling as part of your service. Pitkin County Waste & Recycling Code (link to full doc)

Summary of Key Code Features

Volume-Based Collection Rates

Household trash collection rates in Pitkin County are based on the trash container size and collection frequency and intended to provide equitable service pricing and an incentive for landfill diversion. Customers with smaller containers/less frequency pay less than customers with larger containers/high collection frequency.

  • Small containers are defined as volume capacity ranges from 30 to 39 gallons

  • Medium capacity ranges from 60 to 69 gallons. Two small containers may provide the equivalent of a medium container.

  • Large capacity ranges from 90 to 99 gallons.  A mix of small and medium containers may be used as the equivalent of a large container

  • Extra Large is defined as capacity ranges from 1- to 4-cubic yards.

  • Other Is defined as a dumpster or roll-off with greater than 4-cubic yard capacity

The determination of Trash overloading shall be made on an individual collection date basis by the registered hauler. There shall be no “averaging” of collected volumes to allow for overloading on one collection date to offset a low volume at another time.

Recyclables

At a minimum, all recyclables shall be separated from trash and placed for collection by residential customers, group accounts, commercial customers, and centralized collection facilities. The inclusion of additional recoverable materials that can be added at any time in the future are strongly encouraged.

Recyclable containers should not contain more than 25% non-recyclable materials as determined by the waste hauler using their best judgement.

Any customer with more than 25% contamination in recyclables placed for collection shall be notified by phone, electronic mail, or hard copy delivery to the customer account address with wording provided by Pitkin County.

Accepted recyclables include:
